St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church

Religious Education Information

Our Mission is to assist families in understanding both what we believe as Catholics and how to live out those beliefs. The Church proclaims the gospel and celebrates the Sacraments to glorify God’s name and to draw his flock to conversion and discipleship. The first purpose of our Religious Education Program is that we are here to assist parents, the primary educators of children, in fostering a child’s spiritual growth.

Faith formation is an ongoing development of the whole person into the image and likeness of Jesus Christ. To use the image of St. Paul, “we put on Christ” so that Christ is the center of our lives. All Catholics are on the journey of faith formation. We begin this life-long journey in the waters of Baptism and hope to continue it in eternal life with Jesus in heaven.

Our Religious Education Program strives to provide a solid foundation in the Catholic faith. Students are encouraged to begin formal religion classes in the first grade – though we do offer Pre-K and Kindergarten.

Students enrolled in Catholic School do not need to attend RE though they are welcomed. For those students not enrolled in Catholic Schools our Religious Education program meets once a week on Sundays as outlined in our calendar.

Faith formation does not end with Confirmation. All Catholics are invited to grow in our faith. For this purpose, the parish offers Days of Recollection, Missions, Scripture Sharing, Adult Bible Studies, and Prayer Groups. Please consult the Bulletin for more information.

The second purpose of our Religious Education Program is sacramental preparation.

BAPTISM: Children who are eight years of age and older must attend RE for one year before celebrating the Sacrament of Baptism.

FIRST HOLY COMMUNION: Students must attend RE classes for two years in order to receive First Holy Communion. Older children will be placed in an age-appropriate class; but still must attend two years before First Holy Communion.

FIRST RECONCILIATION (Confession): Students are instructed in the Sacrament of Reconciliation before First Holy Communion and celebrate the Sacrament before First Holy Communion.

CONFIRMATION: According to Archdiocese of Atlanta norms, students must be in the tenth grade or older to be considered for the Sacrament of Confirmation. However, they must attend a minimum of 2 full years of RE preparation prior (9th and 10th grade) and be knowledgeable in the following areas: The Sacraments, The Commandments, Major Bible Stories and Themes, and The Liturgy. Adults (18 years of age & older) who have not received sacraments are invited to speak with the Pastor about sacramental preparation for Adults which meets on Wednesday evenings following the 6:30 p.m. Holy Mass.

REGISTRATION: Registration begins in May for the following August. Classes begin in early August. Registration closes September 1. However, students who register late are marked “absent” for those classes which they missed. A student must complete 90% of class time to receive credit for the year. Students who fail to achieve 90% of classes will need to make up their hours missed the following year. For this reason, parents are encouraged to register their child early.

SPECIAL NEEDS: Parents are asked to please speak with the Pastor concerning any special needs – medical, educational, social – which your child might have.

TRANSFERS: Students who have attended a Catholic School or another Religious Education Program can receive “credit” for the courses they have completed. In order to be placed in the proper class (level), we must receive a letter from the school or RE program with the years completed and the attendance record. Students who have taken a long-time off between classes may also be required to make-up for missed studies.
